Before winding up the steep route to the summit of the mountain, drive through broad open rice fields and dispersed communities with traditional dwellings. The ancient Khmer Empire was founded in Phnom Kulen, which is usually recognized as the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. Sandstones were carried to Angkor from this sacred mountain during the construction of the ancient temples. Khmer regard Kulen to be Cambodia’s most sacred mountain.
