Wat Thmei, also known as the "Killing Fields of Wat Thmei," is a significant site located near the town of Siem Reap in Cambodia. It is one of the many sites associated with the Khmer Rouge regime, which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 under the leadership of Pol Pot. During this period, an estimated 1.7 million people died due to starvation, forced labor, and execution as the regime sought to create an agrarian socialist society. Wat Thmei serves as a memorial and a reminder of the atrocities committed during this dark chapter in Cambodian history. The site features a Buddhist temple, or wat, that has been transformed into a memorial for the victims of the Khmer Rouge. One of the most poignant aspects of Wat Thmei is the stupa, a structure that houses the skulls and bones of victims who were executed in the area. The stupa is designed with glass panels, allowing visitors to see the remains inside, which serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of the regime's brutality.
